Mayweather Delivers as Heavy Favorite at Sportsbooks

The "money fight", Mayweather vs. McGregor, held on the weekend in the gambling capital of the world Las Vegas grabbed the attention of virtually everybody in the world, including high stakes poker pros. The great people at pokernews.com put together a compilation of who bet on who - and while overall more bets were placed on crowd favorite McGregor, the cardplayers overwhelmingly went with bookie favorite Mayweather, and as you are probably aware, got it right.

Irish UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor took on the welterweight champion of WBO and IBF Floyd Mayweather. It was the first professional boxing match the MMA fighter had, meanwhile Mayweather had an undefeated record in pro boxing going into the fight. Although McGregor started the bout beyond expectations, Mayweather ended it all with a TKO in the 10th round, keeping his impeccable record, 50-0.

The odds reflected the "deficit" McGregor had in experience, he started as a +950 underdog in November last year at the bookmakers when the idea of the fight was first dangled to the public, by the time the day of the match came around, he went down to +265 - this is likely due to the fact that since he has a large fan base, the many bets that were placed on his victory based on nothing but fondness drove down the odds.

The "edge-seeking" high stakes poker community saw great value in that, and as an article on pokernews.com pointed out, many of them placed bets on Mayweather's win.

Indiana poker pro Andrew Moreno wagered $5,000 on it, 50 times more than he ever placed on a sports bet - it paid off at the end. WPT commentator Tony Dunst also chose the winning side. So did millionaire business man Bill Perkins who's well known for his eccentric prop bets among poker players - he went with a very ordinary gamble this time. Scott Seiver also bet on Mayweather, while Jennifer Harman half-jokingly was pondering on Twitter whether putting up her life savings on Mayweater's victory is a good idea or not. On the other hand, Brian Rast lost some money by picking McGregor as the winner.

Doug Polk used his wits to comment on all the action the fight generated among poker players, tweeting "If Mayweather loses this fight the high stakes poker scene is going to become the mid stakes poker scene".
