'Molly's Game' ticket sales surpass $50 million

Aaron Sorkin’s movie had a total budget of about $30 million and has already passed that by more than $20 million.

It's been only two months since the film, based on Molly Bloom's life hit the movie theaters. This was the most successful high-profile poker movie since the legendary 'Rounders' which hit the cinemas in 1998 starring A-listers with the likes of Matt Damon, Edward Norton or John Malkovich.

Although several poker-based movies have been released between the two aforementioned films, none of them were able to reach the same level in terms of fame and revenue, either. The only other movie capable of generating 8-figure ticket sales is online poker movie "Runner Runner" from 2013, which grossed $62.6 million worldwide. 'Molly's Game' is close to surpassing that as well.

The blockbuster, with all-star cast and crew, ended the opening weekend with $7 million has grossed $28.7 million in total in the United States, while $24.6 million internationally, with the majority of that coming from the UK. The total number of  $53 million is only ten million away from surpassing Ben Affleck-featuring, "Runner Runner".

The list of the household names, with the likes of Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba or Kevin Costner, certainly had a great effect on the sales, but the story itself and the rare insider-look on the most exclusive high-stakes games attracted many poker fans. The movie was also nominated for an Oscar for the best-adapted screenplay, which was written by the debuting director, Aaron Sorkin, based on the memoir of Bloom's.
