Chin Wei Lim takes down €100K Diamond High Roller, Main Event continues

The Malaysian player beat Jean-Noel Thorel heads-up for the €2,172,104. The field has reduced to 29 in the Main Event.

The WSOP Europe at the King's Casino, Rozvadov will end this week, with only a few events still running. The field in the €10,350 Main Event has already reduced to 28 from the original 541 with Anthony Zinno as the current chip leader. All of the remaining players locked up €26,986 but the pay jumps are getting bigger and bigger. The winner will walk away with €1,133,678 and the golden bracelet.

Several well-known pros are still in the field, with the likes of current chip leader, Anthony Zinno, who has 5,220,000, or current second Dario Sammartino, who's sitting on a 5-million stack.

Other notables, with smaller stacks, are Alex Foxen (1,150,000) and David "ODB" Baker (775,000). However, with blinds of 20,000/40,000/40,000, they still have some room to maneuver.

€100,000 Diamond High Roller

The €100K event generated 72 entries, and the tournament rewarded the best 11 players. It was Ryan Riess, who busted first in the money, for €154,285. He was followed by Paul Phua (10th; €177,477), Daniel Pidun (9th; €177,477), Phil Ivey (8th; €212,504) and Danny Tang (7th; €264,440).

Germany's high-roller regular, Ole Schemion was next to go, taking home €341,510, while Austrian pro, Matthias Eibinger departed in 5th place, for €457,107.

High-roller crusher, Christopher Vogelsang busted in 4th place, which earned him €633,336. Vogelsang is the second most-winningest German player with $22,634,465.

Team partypoker member, Anatoly Filatov started the final table with a big lead, but he eventually had to settle for 3rd, good for €907,301.

The heads-up play between Lim and Bioderma founder, Thorel only lasted for four hands, despite the similar stacks. Lim was able to quickly build a lead and ended the tournament in a pretty weird final hand, as he described: “I raised the button, he defends. The flop was eight-four-deuce, two clubs. I had eight-four off with the four of clubs. I bet 60% of the pot, he calls. The turn was the trey of clubs, completes the flush. I bet half pot, he calls. The river was the four of spades, he checked, and then I just bet half pot again. He goes all-in, but I heard him say something but didn’t really clearly hear anything. And then it was kind of a mess, we had to wait for the floor to come. I was sitting there with second-nuts and was hoping that it was going to be ruled an all-in. And then they ruled it as all-in and it was over!”

The 2019 World Series of Poker Europe was a pretty profitable trip for Chin Wei. He booked a €2,172,104 score in this event, while he also finished second to James Chan in the €250,000 Super High Roller, for €1,757,857.

“To be honest, it feels pretty weird. I am just used to losing, and losing, and losing. And then, I’m just pretty lucky on this trip. I can’t complain. The field was hard in the €250,000 and to be able to finish second, I really can’t complain, even though I didn’t win it, it gave me a good confidence boost.”

“Today everything went my way, I was running good I think, a lot of these guys are better than me. It was smooth sailing, no tough spots. I came into the day fourth in chips and we were all pretty deep. I thought it would be a long day but apparently, we only played for six hours. So that was quite surprising.”

He praised fellow poker pros, Danny Tang and Michael Soyza, and his backer after the win: “We talk a lot about hands with each other, me, Danny (Tang), and (Michael) Soyza. I ask them a lot for advice, they helped my game a lot. I have to thank them and my backer, Ivan Leow too of course!”
