Gavin Smith Poker Tips

FTP pro and WSOP bracelet winner Gavin Smith made this series of short poker strategy tips videos quite a while ago, but they are as fresh and relevant as if they were brand new. Smith first drew attention to himself on the 2004 show The Ultimate Poker Challenge where he soon became a favourite due to his attitude, sense of humor as well as his drinking habit. He has made over $4 million in tournaments since then and even won the $2,500 Mixed Hold’em event in this year’s WSOP.

Here are a couple of examples from his “Poker Tips” video series.

Maria Ho: Women Fear Men in Poker

Although not as successful as Annie Duke or Liv Boeree yet, Taiwan-born 27-year-old Maria Ho is a renowned female poker player, boasting eight WSOP and two WPT in the money finishes. In 2007, she finished 38th in the WSOP Main Event, winning $237,865, which is her greatest achievement so far.

Despite her youth, she is considered an experienced poker player and as such, it is little wonder she has a firm opinion about the scandal of this year’s WSOP Ladies Event: six male players, including Shaun Deeb and David ‘Blue Knight1’ Sesso, have entered the game, disregarding the organisers’ explicit request. They stated that poker is not something in which there is room for “segregation” as it suggests that women cannot possibly match men in terms of skill or knowledge, etc.

Introducing the Moneybookers Security Token

Many poker players use Moneybookers (MB) to transfer money to and from poker rooms, in addition to a variety of other financial transactions. Some are, however, afraid of creating a MB account, out of fear from hacker attacks, which I can understand. With the Security Token (ST), however, these attempts can be neutralized.

Moneybookers Security Token How it Works

The token is a small gadget to enhance the security of your MB account. In essence, it “generates unique, one-time passwords to increase the security upon login to your Moneybookers account.” In every 32 seconds, it produces a new entry code which is to be given after the usual process when logging in. To see the code, you need to push the small button on the token, so that it is displayed for 10 seconds.

Betfair Shares to Hit LSE Tomorrow

As iGamingBusiness has reported, the shares of online gambling and sportsbook giant Betfair are to reach the main market of the London Stock Exchange on 27th October. The company’s initial public offering means they will sell 15% of their total equity for £13 per unit.

Betfair

Betfair owners Ed Wray and Andrew Black aim to sell 16 million units, gaining £1.4 billion, which would provide for reinforcing the company’s “long-term relationships with customers, regulators and business partners around the world.”

As opposed to most of the competition, Betfair may still boast a rise in its weekly traffic and a 29% annual increase in underlying earnings. In this respect, the optimism of company CEO David Yu is quite understandable: “We believe we have many opportunities to grow our leading position in the online sportsbetting and gaming market and we are extremely pleased that new investors share our enthusiasm for the future of the business. We are grateful for the support of all our shareholders, old and new, and will work hard to generate further value for all our stakeholders.”

EPT Vienna Launches Today

The main event of the 2010 EPT Vienna kicks off today at the Kursalon Palace in the capital of Austria. It is the second time a stop of the PokerStars European Poker Tour takes place in the Middle-European country; in 2005, Pascal ‘Triple P’ Perrault managed to take down the event, winning €184,500.

While 297 players registered five years ago, the €5,300 event this year is likely to exceed that number with 209 players having entered as yet and the registration being open until day 1B (Wednesday). From the international elite, here are only some of the names expected to turn up in Vienna: Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, Daniel Negreanu, Luca Pagano, JP Kelly, Arnaud Mattern, Pierre Neuville, Dario Minieri, Johannes Strassman, Pieter De Korver, Kevin MacPhee, Tomer Berda and Alex Kravchenko.

Gus Hansen to Profit Once Again?

In early October, we all felt sure that Gus Hansen was to be the high stakes fish of the month, but he ended up winning over $1.3 million at Full Tilt Poker since then. In his latest, 11 hours long session, which he played against ‘Urindanger’, he won around $500,000.

In September, it was only Brian Townsend and his -$2,534,000 that stood between Hansen and the shameful title of High Stakes Fish of the Month, loosing “merely” $2,097,000 in online cash games. By 10th October, he lost $1,533,000, paving his way for actually being “honoured” this month – when he started winning. By the 24th, he decreased his losses by $1,344,000, winning $447,000 during his latest clash alone.

Ladbrokes Offers Anonymous Tables

Ladbrokes, leading UK betting company, has recently added the option of anonymous tables to their online poker portfolio. This ensures that your data, including your screen name and avatar, is absolutely inaccessible to your opponents. Switching between anonymous and normal formats is, of course, possible.

“We are really excited about this launch. Never before have poker players been able to play without other players knowing who they are. This brings an added element to the game for people whose playing style maybe recognizable. For those new to the game, it is an opportunity to try some different moves without getting a reputation because players will simply never know who they are playing against,” Kate McLennan, Ladbrokes spokesperson commented.

If you have a spare one, you can sell it for cash in The Exchange and if you happen to need any to enter a certain Gold Card tournament, you might find one available for purchase. In order to be able to access The Exchange, an upgrade to Cake 2.0 is going to be necessary, if you have missed it yet. Once logged in, you will see the "Exchange" button in the Gold Card tournament lobby, which takes you to the marketplace.

The Annie Duke Show Kicked Off

Annie Duke has started her new show with the aforementioned title. You can watch the first, 59 minutes long episode here.

The show utilizes a simple, black backdrop before which Duke and her guests appear and talk. Whether this is gloomy or if Duke needs that kind of atmosphere to create tension, I leave to you to decide. At any rate, I, too, would be interested in an appearance by Daniel Negreanu on the show.

Google Android applications: is Rush Poker to be added soon?

While the former currently offers only NLHE cash games, the latter will provide one of Full Tilt’s most popular formats, the Rush Poker. Following months of testing, it is assumed that FTP is ready to release the application in a few weeks’ time. What is more, this would be the very first real-money service provided by a major e-gaming company.
