Daniel Negreanu - Increase number of players paid out instead of $10 million first prize

The Canadian PokerStars Pro has stated that he believes that more recreational players would attend the Main Event if they increased the number of players cashing from 10% to 15%.

As we have previously reported, Caesars Entertainment has officially announced that they are going to run the WSOP from May 27, 2015 until July 14, 2015. The $10,000 buy-in Main Event will run between July 5 - 14, and the first prize is once again $10 million guaranteed. The organizers believe that the $10 million for the winner draws in a lot of recreational players, which has been proven last year, as 6,683 players have registered which is a decent increase to the 2013 numbers (6,352 entrants). The 5% increase is too little according to several players, and they also believe that it's not influenced by the big top prize.

Daniel Negreanu has shared his opinion regarding the matter, as he often does. He said that the increase cannot directly be linked to the $10 million top prize, and that he believes that the economical upswing and the fact that many players have received their Full Tilt balances have much more to do with it.

Negreanu believes that it would be much more effective to increase the number of players paid from the standard 10% to 15%, even if it means decreasing the amount of players receive when they cash, which would be beneficial for multiple reasons

  • smaller bubble means players stall less and the game is faster
  • more people would leave with the feeling that they've won
  • since the money would be spread around more players, more recreational players would return the following year.

Negreanu has created a lot of controversy in 2014 with his opinion regarding the Amaya changes, regulars, casino games and more, but this idea has been supported by many top professionals including Phil Hellmuth.
