Darren Elias wins back-to-back WPTs in same season

Darren "darrenelias" Elias won the WPT Borgata Poker Open in Atlantic City back in September, and has now followed it up with a win in the WPT Caribbean last Friday. With that he became the first player ever to win back-to-back WPT titles in the same season.

The last time a player won two events was back in WPT Season III, when both Tuan Le and Daniel Negreanu picked up two titles.

The first player to ever win back-to-back WPT Main Events was Marvin "madmarvin" Rettenmaier, who won the closing event of the Season X WPT World Championship and the first event of Season XI, the WPT Merit Cyprus Classic, but a back-to-back win in the same season has been unheard of.

Elias' win in September brought him $843,000, while the WPT Caribbean win was good for $127,680. Elias had a tough time when he got heads-up, his opponent, Christophe Rosso held a 5-1 chiplead on him.

Elias managed to double up twice to claim the lead, then Rosso doubled up twice. In the final hand of the tournament, Rosso shoved with 7-6 only to be called by Elias' A-A. Even though Rosso improved to two pair on the turn, the river paired the board and gave Elias a higher two pair to win the tournament and set the record.

Elias, who is also an accomplished online player with $3.5 million in online winnings, has added $127,000 to his already impressive live winnings of $2.5 million with the win.
