Doug "WCGRider" Polk crushes Denoking for $736,000, then demands his buttons
Doug "WCGRider" Polk is the self-proclaimed best online heads-up No Limit Hold'em player in the world, and he is never afraid to prove his superiority when a new challenger steps up to the plate. Last week, Polk has battled with Swedish Denoking (wilhasha on PokerStars), and after losing in the first couple sessions, he turned it around with a $736,000 win. After Denoking sat out, Polk demanded that the buttons be distributed evenly, a move which many thought was not good business.
Polk and Denoking battled at the $200/$400 NLHE tables, and even though Polk lost the biggest pot of the session, he managed to have the biggest winning day of his career. In the hand in question, Denoking called a 3bet from Polk in position with 88, and flopped a set on the KQ8 (two diamonds) board. WCGRider held the T-9 of diamonds and was drawing to flush and straight outs. He didn't manage to hit, and Denoking scooped the $338,700 pot.
Despite losing this huge pot, WCGRider didn't lose momentum and finished the session up $736,000. Denoking decided to cut his losses (he lost a total of $1 million last week) and sat out, and that's when WCGRider posted the following:
In heads-up poker matches, it's customary to settle the buttons after play is finished, and according to WCGRider, Denoking has played 16 more buttons than him throught the past week's sessions. Plenty of people on the forums stated that asking for 16 buttons worth (roughly $2,000-$3,000) after crushing someone for $736,000 is bad business, because Denoking might not want to play him again (and WCGRider has stated that he thinks of Denoking as a huge fish).
WCGRider also commented in the thread, and stated that Denoking is "buttoning" constantly, and that he evens out buttons even when he has a big losing session, and that he has specifically asked Denoking to honor the buttons in previous sessions.
What do you think? Is WCGRider right for asking for the buttons, or should he have just stayed quiet and not risk that Denoking gets offended and refuses to play him in the future?
