Bredin Wins ANZPT Queenstown 2013, Featuring 17 Minutes Hand

Jonathan Bredin suffers from Little’s Disease, a form of cerebral palsy. This, however, did not keep him from winning the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour Queenstown 2013 Main Event. The tournament happened to feature one of the longest hands in poker history as well.

Jonathan Bredin

The Australia New Zealand Poker Tour (ANZPT) Queenstown 2013 NZ$3,000 Main Event kicked off on 30 July at the SkyCity casino. A total of 126 players registered and built a prize pool of NZ$340,200. The nine-handed Final Table took place on Sunday with Jonathan Bredin in the chiplead; Bredin suffers from Little’s Disease, a form of cerebral palsy, and was assisted by a modified iPad and a specialist to be able to communicate with the rest of the players.

The Final Table seat draw was as follows:

Seat 1: Daniel Laidlaw – 106,000
Seat 2: Jon Pierre Narbey – 408,000
Seat 3: Chiu Yeung Lee – 161,000
Seat 4: Jonathan Bredin – 657,000
Seat 5: Colin Carpenter - 89.,000
Seat 6: Raj Ramakrishnan – 271,000
Seat 7: Ricky Kroesen – 241,000
Seat 8: Daniel Neilson – 122,000
Seat 9: Michael Chon – 134,000

Play started on Level 17 (500/3,000/6,000) and Michael Chon busted out first, check-raising all-in on Bredin’s 15,000 bet on the 9Clubs KSpade 5Heart flop.

Chon: KClubs 7Heart
Bredin: KHeart QDiamond

Turn: QClubs
River: JClubs

Bredin won with two pairs.

Daniel Neilson, Colin Carpenter and Ricky Kroesen followed, the latter two being eliminated by Bredin. By Level 20 (2,000/6,000/12,000), the following chip counts were set:

Jonathan Bredin – 1,055,000
Daniel Laidlaw – 340,000
Jon Pierre Narbey – 325,000
Raj Ramakrishnan – 290,000
Chiu Yeung Lee – 205,000

Early into the level, a good example was added to the list of reasons why many players argue for the introduction of the shot clock; Chiu Yeung Lee and Jon Pierre Narbey took part in a 17 minutes long hand, a length considered by media coverage teams a possible world record.

Lee opened to 24,000 from UTG and only Narbey called from the BB. The flop came 8Diamond TClubs 9Heart, Narbey bet 45,000 and a tanking battle began. Lee kept thinking for about 3-4 minutes and Raj Ramakrishnan called the clock on him. Lee called but Narbey followed on the 7Spade turn, taking his time before betting 45,000. With players getting more and more impatient, Lee analyzed the situation for long before calling. The ADiamond hit the board on the river and Narbey took another 3 minutes before Bredin called the clock on him. Using up the entire minute, he eventually checked. Even though he had ample time at his disposal during Narbey’s tanking, Lee also took minutes to come to a decision; when Ramakrishnan called the clock on him again, he raised to 102,000. It goes without saying that Narbey started thinking on his next move and, while their fellow players started to get really loud and angry about their hand, he had the dealer count the pot. Breding called the clock on him and he used it all up before folding. The floorman warned the two of them that they would be given only 30 seconds the next time someone calls the clock on them.

Narbey soon busted out, losing a flip to Ramakrishnan. The latter finished in 4th place, losing a flip himself, but to Bredin. Lee was out in 3rd, his Q-9 failing to improve over Bredin’s A-K. The heads-up started with Daniel Laidlaw in the lead.

Daniel Laidlaw – 1,285,000
Jonathan Bredin – 900,000

A deal was offered in the heads-up but Laidlaw refused; to his sorrow, he ended up losing the last hand of the action-packed duel on Level 25 (5,000/20,000/40,000), when he showed his remaining 800,000 and Bredin called.

Laidlaw: ADiamond
Bredin: KClubs KSpade

Board: 3Clubs KDiamond JSpade QSpade 8Clubs

Bredin won with a top set.

Jonathan Bredin took down the Main Event of the tour for NZ$93,600, achieving his first ever live tournament score.
