Gus Hansen Wins WSOPE Event #4

After suspending the play two times, the 4th event of the 2010 World Series of Poker Europe in London has finally come to an end. The winner of the £10,000 + £350 NLHE High Roller Heads-Up Championship is Gus ’The Great Dane’ Hansen, collecting his first WSOP golden bracelet ever.

The event was delayed first because the early stages took longer than expected and later because Hansen as well as his adversary Jim Collopy won 1-1 matches each and they agreed upon suspension. For Collopy, this was the first live final table appearance, while Hansen had been expected for quite a while to finally win a bracelet he long deserved. As soon as both were eliminated in the Main Event, the third match of the HU finale took place and it even received an unexpected publicity from ESPN.

In a 3-hour-long play, Hansen won a hand later proved decisive, in which he rivered a full house (Deuces over Jacks) against Collopy’s triple Jacks. An hour later, ‘Mr. Big Queso’ went pre-flop all-in with K 4 which the Dane called, showing 4 4; although picking up a flush draw, Collopy’s hand missed both a fifth spade and a King and thus Hansen won. Before Collopy, Hansen bested a field of poker pros including Max Steinburg, Mark Everett, Phil Ivey and Neil Channing, eventually cashing in £288,409 of the £1,030,000 total prize pool. “Every poker tournament that I enter, I try to play at my highest level.  I always try to win.  At the World Series of Poker, there is so much tradition.  It’s been going on since Doyle Brunson was just a little kid.  I was around for some of it and have been a part of that group.  So, to finally come here and win this gold bracelet feels very special,” he commented.
