No Bill Gates - Gus Hansen on His Losses

In one of his latest interviews, Dane pro Gus Hansen reveals the reasons for his loss of a total of $7 million this year: he got rusty, lazy and unlucky.

Gus Hansen

For years, Gus Hansen had been the face of Danish poker; a three times WPT-champion, a WSOP title holder and Aussie Millions winner, Hansen’s lifetime live tournament winnings total at $11,240,677. He also used to be a feared shark of the cash game tables, up until his downswing that started in May 2009.

According to HSDB, his $1.5 million winnings at Full Tilt Poker turned into a loss of $6,923,208 by the end of that year.

Hansen’s stats keep dropping lower and lower ever since; even though he has not played for long after Black Friday, he is now the second biggest loser around with $7,335,792. His lifetime online high stakes losses are at $13,747,065 in 1,358,055 hands, second only to Cirque du Soleil owner billionaire Guy Laliberté.

What can be the reasons for such bad years? FlopTurnRiver’s Rob ‘Hippy’ King asked Hansen about this in an interview, which you can watch below:

Highlights of the interview are as follows:

  • King asks Hansen about his losses post-Black Friday. Hansen admits being rusty, lazy and unlucky, as well as being superficial at game selection – a lethal combination, he says.
  • King then replies it is true for both him and Viktor ‘Isildur1’ Blom that they tend to pick the toughest opponents, and asks Hansen why. The Dane answers it has always been his way of learning but needs to change that now, as he can run out of money, not being Bill Gates.
  • They then discuss the best 27TD player around, Alex ‘Alexonmoon’ Luneau, as well as the FLO8 games against ‘SallyWoo’.
  • Finally, King asks Hansen about his plans in poker for this year. Hansen announces aiming at turning his focus to start winning and hopes to improve his numbers.

To date, Hansen is the biggest loser in November with $969,159 in losses in 9,679 hands.
