Rounders writers David Levien and Brian Koppelman had already written the story of the sequel to the ultimate poker movie but copyright owner Miramax has not seen the financial potential in the movie until now, especially considering what a failure Runner Runner turned out to be. It seemed fans would never see their favourite gamblers again, when along came the Wenstein brothers.

Harvey and Bob Weinstein’s Weinstein Company announced this week that they return to cooperate with Miramax in producing a number of movie and television titles. Planned are a Good Will Hunting television series, a sequel to Shakespeare in Love as well as to Rounders.

“I’ve discussed making Rounders 2 with Matt Damon and I would say that’s going to be instantaneous. The guys have a great idea, a way to make it more international where you start the card game in Paris, that’s all I want to say. There might be a certain beautiful Parisian actress involved in it, and then we’re off to the racetrack and Vegas with Matty and Edward Norton, and a new supervillain to replace John Malkovich,” Harvey Weinstein said, adding that he would personally welcome Robert de Niro in the role.

The Weinstein brothers established Miramax in 1979, making it one of the most recognised independent studio, producing cult hits like the titles above or Pulp Fiction. In 1993, Disney purchased the company, which employed the Weinsteins until 2005, when they established the Weinstein Company.
