British poker ace Sam Trickett has over $19.8 million in live tournament winnings; he moved to the tables after an injury rendered him unable to become a professional football player, even though he had been a talented player with promising career opportunities. He never lost his devotion to his favourite sport, though, and it was therefore a unique and exciting opportunity for him to visit his team Manchester United during a training session in Carrington. Trickett met all the stars of the Red Devils, not to mention retired aces like Bryan Robson.

While it was a once in a lifetime experience for him to meet the team, he appreciated getting to know his two idols, Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand the most. The occasion for the meeting was a poker tournament organised by the club at the Old Trafford. Several pros were invited, including Trickett, who, despite being used to much higher stakes than the £250 event, could not resist the opportunity to meet his favourites.

In addition to being able to play in the stadium of Manchester United, participants of the event got to watch the team playing against Sevilla. Eventually, Trickett won the Road To Old Trafford tournament, defeating Alejandro Santos heads-up. The 27 years old pro won £10,000, which he instantly donated to Ferdinand’s Live the Dream Foundation.

“I am really happy to win this event. I played for fun but I felt I really had to win at Old Trafford – I made it my mission! I am happy to make a contribution to Rio’s charity, it is a very worthy cause. This has been a great fun weekend and so much different and more relaxed than any other tournament I have played. I am totally made up for winning at Old Trafford, it has been an amazing experience,” Trickett commented.

While current players of Manchster United were unable to play in the tournament due to the game against Sevilla, former highlight footballers of the club joined the field, including Robson and Dwight Yorke.
