Gus, Gus Never Changes

After 2012, Gus Hansen emerged as one of the biggest online high stakes losers in 2013 as well. Apparently, he aims for the title for a third time this year.

Gus Hansen

In the annual report for 2013, Full Tilt Poker Pro Gus Hansen turned out to be one of the biggest losers of the online high stakes cash game season, losing $8,461,472 in 171,743 hands. Becoming the weakest player in two consecutive years, losing $3,204,539 in 63,686 hands in 2012, the once feared pro can hardly blame variance alone anymore. He is currently the second biggest online high stakes loser ever, right after Guy Laliberté.

In an interview last year, Hansen admitted to having to face his game becoming rusty after the re-launch of FTP in 2012 and that he had been unable to regain his former edge. He was not working on his game and would ignore table selection, playing against anyone on the highest limits. Additionally, a downswing had kicked in, he said. Even though the Dane insisted he would pay attention to game selection and training in the future, he apparently failed to deliver.

This year, Hansen keeps giving away money by the hundreds of thousands... A mere two weeks into 2014 and after a proportionately small sample of play, he is down $756,239 in 11,468 hands, losing twice as much as the second biggest loser of the year, Viktor ‘Isildur1’ Blom, who is currently standing at $368,878 in losses. Empirical evidence suggests, however, that Blom is capable of turning this even into profits in a single session, while Hansen has left his reputation for crushing the field far behind long ago.

The Dane lost the largest sum in PLO games, $625,518 in 7,131 hands. In draw, he is down $130,720 after 4,337 hands.

Recently, Hansen also drew some attention to his game through an awkward clash with ‘SallyWoo’, possibly the courtesy of his frustration over his losses. In a FLO8 game, the Dane was 3-betting when his internet connection was disrupted. Upon returning, he confronted ‘SallyWoo’, saying that he should give back his $4,000 3-bet, according to a friend.

‘SallyWoo’ then reminded him there is an agreement in effect for such cases and he merely adhered to it by taking the money. Hansen then moved on to accuse the Omaha specialist of using illegal utility software.

The relevant chat log is as follows:
